Ocean and sky

Research Field

  • Microbial oceanography
  • Aquatic microbial ecology
  • Deep-ocean biogeochemistry

The ocean stores a lot of carbon.

Marine microbes influence
whether that carbon is released as CO2 or retained for long timescales.

I study the role of microbes, particularly Bacteria and Archaea, in oceanic biogeochemical cycling.

I measure prokaryotic activity under conditions as close as possible to those in their natural habitat (at depth; in situ). By combining these rate measurements with oceanographic observations, I try to link microbial processes to carbon cycling and other biogeochemical processes.

From the Ocean to Motion

This short film captures the intersection of oceanographic research and digital artistry, bringing the hidden dynamics of the deep to life.
