I study how deep-ocean conditions constrain microbial life, and how microbial activity feeds back on ocean biogeochemistry. A central goal is to quantify activity at depth reflecting the environment where microbes live. Measuring microbial activity at depth When and where do in situ rate measurements change our view of deep-ocean biogeochemical cycling and carbon budgets? Shipboard incubations can alter pressure and temperature, potentially biasing activity estimates. I therefore focus on quantifying microbial activity under conditions as close as possible to those at depth (in situ). We use an in situ microbial […] - [Home](https://chieamano.com/): Chie Amano Research Field How does the deep ocean shape microbial life? How do microbes shape the deep ocean? The ocean stores a lot of carbon. Microbes in the deep ocean influence whether that carbon is released as CO2 or retained for long timescales. Key questions Research approach I aim to measure prokaryotic activity in the deep ocean in their natural habitat (at depth; in situ). By combining these rate measurements with oceanographic observations, I link microbial processes to carbon cycling and other biogeochemical processes. Research cruises Map of oceanographic expeditions I joined. The sampling locations cover major ocean basins. Content […] [comment]: # (Generated by Hostinger Tools Plugin)
